💊 Safe Supplementation: Why Third-Party Testing & Medical Oversight Matter

August is National Wellness Month — a time to reflect on how we care for our bodies, minds, and overall health. As a registered dietitian, I’m passionate about empowering you to make informed choices that support long-term wellness — including how you choose to supplement your nutrition.

The Supplement Industry: Largely Unregulated

Supplements can be powerful tools in a wellness journey — but not all supplements are created equal. Unlike prescription medications, supplements are not tightly regulated by the FDA for safety, purity, or effectiveness. This means:

  • Ingredients may not match the label

  • Doses may be inaccurate

  • Products can be contaminated with harmful substances

This is why I always recommend third-party tested supplements. Look for certifications like:

These independent organizations verify that what’s on the label is actually what’s in the bottle — with no dangerous surprises.

Supplement Caution: Discuss with Your Doctor

In my practice — and among friends and family — I’ve seen far too many people experience side effects from supplements they thought were “safe” because they were recommended by a well-meaning provider, such as a chiropractor, health coach, or social media influencer.

The problem? These supplements often aren’t assessed for interactions with:

  • Prescription medications

  • Medical diagnoses

  • Lab values

  • Other nutrients or supplements

  • Chiropractors, health coaches and social media influencers also often get "kick backs" for recommending/selling you "their" supplements (*seems pretty convenient that you suddenly "need this")

Your primary care provider (PCP) and your registered dietitian know your full medical history, lab work, and medication list. Always run new supplements by them first (prior to buying it)— especially if you’re already managing a chronic condition or taking prescribed medications. *We may just save you some money (and side effects)!

A Real-Life Example

Recently, a patient began taking a high-dose zinc supplement suggested by another health professional. Within weeks, they developed fatigue and nausea. After reviewing their full health history and labs, we discovered the zinc was depleting copper levels and interfering with their blood pressure medication. A simple conversation with their PCP and me could have prevented this.

My Wellness Promise to You

Wellness isn’t about extremes or quick fixes — it’s about sustainable, personalized choices. Supplements can be incredibly helpful, when used wisely. That’s where professionals like your doctor and dietitian come in — we’re your partners in safe, effective care.

Please — don’t hesitate to reach out if you’re considering a supplement or have questions about one you’re already taking. I’m always here to guide you toward safer, smarter wellness.

Wishing you a vibrant and healthy National Wellness Month!
